BUTYLEN tapes and tape systems have been used for more than 40 years to provide long-term corrosion protection for buried pipes, welded joints, pipe bends and structural elements.
The invention of the first three-ply bonding tape (BUTYLEN-Tape S40) by DEKOTEC in 1971 was followed about 10 years later by further development to produce the asymmetrical three-ply tapes mainly used today. BUTYLEN tape systems have been used very successfully in large-scale pipeline construction and in pipeline renovation since 1971. Thanks to constant improvement and the use of modern polyethylene materials, BUTYLEN tape systems even today represent the state of the art in corrosion protection bonding tape.
BUTYLEN tapes can be combined in various ways to make tape systems. All systems have in common that a self-amalgamating three-ply tape or a butyl tape is always used for the innermost layer of corrosion protection. Only tapes of this type amalgamate in the overlap area to form a sleeve-like coating that is practically diffusion resistant to water vapor and oxygen.
The LIQUITOL® range of polyurethane-based special corrosion protection products. Two-component coating products offer the best possible protection while being extremely user-friendly and safe to apply.
The LIQUITOL® range of products comprises:
DEKOTEC® Heat Shrink Sleeves are available as Medium Temperature Sleeves for operating temperatures up to 55°C and as High Temperature Sleeves for operating temperatures up to 90°C.
DEKOTEC® MTS and HTS heat shrink sleeves are wraparound sleeves with an electron beam irradiation crosslinked polyethylene backing and a bitumen based mastic or a hotmelt adhesive.
DEKOTEC® Heat Shrink Sleeves offer proven corrosion prevention over a wide application range. DEKOTEC® MTS products are applied as a 2-layer system without any need of pre-heating or primer application. DEKOTEC® HTS products can be applied as a 2-layer or 3-layer system.
2-layer systems (Shrink Sleeve directly applied on steel surface)
+ simple application
+ cost efficient
– no epoxy layer
2 layer & 3 layer sleeve systems
3-layer systems (Heat shrink sleeve applied on EP-Primer)
+ same structure as 3 LPE factory coating
+ lower cathodic disbonding
– application more complicated
– expensive
– blast cleaning necessary
DEKOTEC® MTS-30 is a two layer system with stress class C-30.
DEKOTEC® MTS-55 is a two layer system with stress class C-55.
DEKOTEC® HTS-70 is a DIN-DVGW approved system, stress class C-60 UV. DEKOTEC® HTS-90 is a DIN-DVGW approved system, stress class C-80 UV. DEKOTEC® EP-Primer is an epoxy-based, solvent-free liquid primer.
DEKOTEC® DRP is a repair kit for damages in corrosion protective coatings.
Durable corrosion protection of pipeline components with complex shapes is most reliably achieved by using supple PLASTELEN® tapes that follow the contours of the components. Combination with a pipe protection fleece guarantees additional, very good mechanical protection. This method of working is expressly approved by the DVGW (Deutscher Verein des Gas-und Wasserfachs e.V. – German Association for the Gas and Water Industries) worksheets G462 and G463.
The irregular geometry of slide valve groups and ball valves in particular places high demands on the adaptability of the wrapping material. The combination of the DEKOTEC® PLASTELEN® products with BUTYLEN tapes and DEKOTEC® Rockshield DRM-PP fleece provides easy to apply and safe corrosion protection with very good resistance to mechanical stresses. Pipe components such as for example lubrication and ventilation lines can be wrapped using BUTYLEN-Tape AS40 Plus. Combined with BUTYLEN-Primer HT, three or four layers will achieve stress class B-50 or C-50 respectively.
Surfaces and parts with complex shapes are protected using petrolatum mastics and tapes. For the combined application of BUTYLEN and PLASTELEN® products, the BUTYLEN products must be applied first in every case, as otherwise the petrolatum may have an adverse effect on the adhesion of the BUTYLEN tapes. Recesses, voids and crevices must be filled void-free with PLASTELEN® PLAST Compound. In the next stage of work, a total of three layers of PLASTELEN®-Tape P are applied to the part to be protected in a spiral wrap or strip by strip procedure.
The DEKOTEC® Rockshield protection fleeces have proved their usefulness in increasing the mechanical resistance of plastic corrosion protection coatings. DEKOTEC® pipe protection fleeces are laid in strip segments and flamed in the overlap area to fuse them.
For flange connections, the flange gap and the connecting bolts pose special challenges for corrosion protection coatings.
A proven method of evening out the surface is to fill the flange gap and even out the bolt heads and nuts with PLASTELEN® PLAST Compound.
Subsequent wrapping with PLASTELEN®-Tape P ensures reliable corrosion protection. The additional wrapping with DEKOETC® DRM-PP 500 Rockshield fleece gives the anti-corrosion system high mechanical stability to resist indentation and impact stress.
MarineProtect® 100 and MarineProtect® 2000FD are systems for corrosion and weathering protection of piles in splash zones. MarineProtect® 100 and MarineProtect® 2000FD are perfectly suitable for use in highly corrosive environments were ordinary paints and coatings fail.
A special advantage of both MarineProtect® systems is the applicability above and under water, enabling the revision of the corrosion protection of existing construction in a comparably simple manner. MarineProtect® 100 and MarineProtect® 2000FD extends the life-span of piles and moles significantly and reduces the costs and efforts for revision and reconstruction.
DEKOTEC application devices are aids specially designed for on-site conditions for applying the range of DEKOTEC products.
DEKOMAT® wrapping machines simplify the application of BUTYLEN and DEKOTEC tapes and systems. Hand and motor-driven machines ensure that the necessary tension and lapping is maintained. Using wrapping machines increases the speed and safety of post-factory coating using tape systems.
DEKOMIX application equipment for 2-component polyurethane systems makes it possible to apply LIQUITOL® products in cartridge packaging.
The DEKOTEC® product range offers versatile products for special applications such as insulation, mechanical protection for pipes or house entry lines.
Sealing and insulation with butyl rubber tapes for a wide range of uses.
Mechanical protection for pipes with high quality polypropylene fleece materials.
